Heart Meditation. To Live Freely and Love Deeply

What is heart meditation? It is to meditate on the heart, from the heart.

Our hearts do so much for us. The heart is the first organ to come to life and once it starts beating, it doesn’t stop until the end.

Heartache, heartbreak, heartwarming, heartfelt, hearty – we have so many adjectives that describe the extent to which we rely on this organ to live a full life.

But can you live a happy life with a miserable heart?

As children, we start with a fresh slate. A heart full of joy, ready to receive and give love.

Over time, however, life starts to weigh us down. Sorrow, resentment, trauma – sometimes these are not just episodes in our lives, they can alter our hearts forever. They change the way we live and love.

To rediscover the joy of living, let’s mend that beautiful heart of yours with this simple but very powerful meditation. The heart meditation (or my own take on it) has done wonders to improve my mental health and may help you, too.

This meditation is for you if you’re:

  • Afraid to love fully
  • Afraid to embrace life
  • Afraid to open up
  • Afraid to let go
  • Stuck in old feelings
  • Unable to forgive
  • Unable to progress

In other words, your heart is playing it small. It’s wary of people and is shrinking from life. It’s not fully invested. And so, you remain unfulfilled.

It’s time to change that. You can perform the following heart meditation with or without appropriate music. I suggest a duration of 30 minutes, but even 15 minutes will help.

Let’s begin.

  • Sit in a comfortable position
  • Take a deep breath
  • Exhale slowly
(Breathe a few times to establish a flow.)
  • Now, imagine a pink rose or a lotus where your heart is. See this flower in full bloom and in great detail. Dwell upon it. Appreciate its texture. Smell its fragrance. (In doing so if this image makes you happy, it’s ok to smile. In fact, I encourage you to smile.)
  • Absorb the beauty and tenderness of this flower, let it soak into your very being.
  • Visualise a bright light emanating from this flower and spreading in all directions, going as far as you can project it. This light is a symbol of love and connectedness. You are choosing to extend the love and kindness in your heart to all the living things in creation. It’s unconditional and all-encompassing.
  • As you keep breathing gently, this flower keeps blooming, and the light keeps spreading outwards towards everything in creation. Kindness does not discriminate, and neither does this light.
  • Keep up for the entire duration of the meditation.

This light represents the best in you. If there’s someone who has wronged you, whom you hate, don’t get along with or wish to make peace with, direct the light towards them.

Douse your chosen person in the light of love and goodwill.

Your heart is capable of great magnanimity, let’s not constrict it with pettiness. When we are petty and resentful towards others, we actively hamper our own capabilities, greatness, and joy. We block our blessings. Seriously, we do ourselves a huge disservice.

With the help of heart meditation, you will be able to rise above the emotions that keep you down.

You will feel at once lighter and full of vitality. You’ll move from a state of misery to one of joy, from a state of lack to that of abundance.

You can now go out in the world and create beautiful things. You’re now ready to embrace life fully and fearlessly.
